Abstract

Although the funding system is of significant importance for a museum, achieving a stable financial structure is particularly critical for this type of institution. Indeed, because of their structure, museums are not able to support themselves financially and therefore they need external funds, both from the public and the private sector.

Given the critical nature of the financial dimension and the limited attention that literature has so far dedicated to museum financing, this research, with an exploratory perspective, aims to identify the ways in which state museums meet their financial needs.

The survey confirmed the need for museums to seek financial support from external entities (and, in this respect, particularly significant was the role played by Governments and Local Agencies), as well as to activate new collaborations with the private sector and to develop innovative professional figures dedicated to fundraising.
